Growing up during the prolific expanse of the Rave Culture in the 1990’s, although still in high School, DJ Phranx would spend his nights at underground warehouse raves, and his weekends exploring all that LA’s underground had to offer. Immediately taken with the hypnotic bass lines of Jungle / Drum & Bass, he then experienced Trance, and Techno’s dramatic highs. With Break beats as his bass’s, his love for disco and funk came into play, and he started creating his own mixes. The more he experienced, the more he grew to love House Music more than anything he’d ever known. Phranx was most inspired by Doc Martin, who’s eight-hour sets at ‘Unlock The House’ made him watch every move. He inspected DJ’s Sneak and Heather’s style, back in the day, and became obsessed with recreating the experience.
Beginning with radio recordings and a second-hand turntable, he practiced beat matching in his bedroom most nights. He soon graduated to a proper set of decks at various friends’ houses, along with DJ Haj-e. They spent all their free time trying to re-create the magic they felt at those events, their collaboration ultimately resulted in the founding of Fragments of Harmony Recordings.
When asked what his motivation has been, he says:
“All I want to do is make people dance and love what we’re doing every night, whether it’s in a club, or for 500 people at ‘How Sweet It Is’ on the outdoor stage for burning man fire dancers, or just chillin in at home, rockin’ the decks!”
